Grandpal is a service that helps you find a local community member to visit an older loved one when you can't be there yourself. It's about companionship. Find a Grandpal volunteer to pop over for a cup of tea and a chat.
We understand how it feels to not be able to visit your older loved ones as when the reality of life kicks in, generally we have less time than we wish we had. Busy jobs, busy family lives and more means we can't always prioritise what's important but Grandpal is here to help you with that - find someone to be there when you can’t.
"Well whoever you guys are, hats off. I love what you're doing and well done."
"It’s hard to imagine what it was like before Grandpal, we have been engaged with the service for nearly a year now and I have to say it has brought so much more to our home then I originally envisaged, their visits are not only benefiting our residents but also creating a sense of connection to our wider community which holds great value to us.
Thank you for providing such a wonderful service to our residents."
"From the moment we heard about Grandpal, we knew we wanted to be involved. The Grandpals that we have met and commenced with our residents have been so kind, so thoughtful and such an addition to our team and brought new ideas and experiences to our social and activities programme."
"Sometimes the most valuable thing you can offer a resident is time - someone to talk to, a confidant, a pal. The Grandpal service has been a wonderful addition to The Fern Dean and has meant that those who don’t get regular visitors can be prioritised for these visits, ensuring they receive an appropriate level of social engagement."
"Grandpal have been a lifeline for my mum, given her an opportunity to form a new friendship, that is enriching and stimulating for her. She is often very animated when talking of her most recent visit. I am indebted to the Grandpal team for sharing their care and compassion with our family. There’s great peace of mind that comes from knowing your parent has their very own guardian angel, thanks to Grandpal. I couldn’t recommend them more highly."
Knowing that your loved one is being cared for with respect and compassion can help put your mind at ease when you are not able to be with them yourself. Our Grandpals offer companionship for older community members and make great friends in the process.
Our Grandpals typically visit around the same time every week which helps establish a comfortable pattern, making these visits a part of your loved one’s weekly routine that they can always look forward to this quality time.
The safety of our community is at the top of our priority list. Everyone that signs up to be a Grandpal is screened by a member of our team over a detailed phone conversation before we run Garda vetting to ensure all is in order.
They are then screened again by the family of the older person plus must complete several training courses on the Grandpal App so that they are fully prepared for making visits.
We donate half of the monthly membership fee to our charity partners as an act of goodwill and to gain momentum on this mission to combat old-age loneliness.
The other half comes back to Grandpal enabling our little team to run and grow so that we can continue spreading positivity and starting conversations all over the country.
